We asked 10 internal medicine residency programs across the United States to share with us the documentation and communications they provided to their residents on any issues pertaining to care during the COVID-19 pandemic. We asked these GME programs how they responded to the following domains:

We used the following rubric to guide a qualitative assessment of the shared documentation and assessed for the following characteristics:

  • Type of document (policy, practice alert, broadcast email, informal email, PowerPoint presentation)
  • Author / source (chief resident, program director/assistant program director, department leadership, hospital/health system leadership, clerkship director, dean)
  • How fully the documents address the domain/specific questions—any gaps
  • Detail / length of documents, inclusion of references/resources
  • Common themes in content
  • Areas of variation between institutions
